What Is Brand Voice?

Think of brand voice as the way your brand speaks to the world. It’s the vibe and tone that you use when your business speaks through various platforms. Is your brand friendly and chatty? Sophisticated and sleek? Bold and witty? Your brand's voice should match the values that you have for the business and should be consistent across every channel.

Why Brand Messaging Matters

Brand messaging is crucial when it comes to letting customers know what kind of business you are and can heavily impact their choice of whether to buy your product or use your service. If you come across as sloppy and disinterested in your business and you run a law firm, that’s not a good image to be putting out and will turn customers away from you.

Conversely, if you run an IT company who provides support and you come across as professional and knowledgeable, business and customers will trust you before you even say a word to them.

How to Find (and Keep) Your Brand Voice

If you’re just starting out or feel like your messaging is a bit all over the place, here’s where to begin:

1. Define your brand personality

Are you confident? Quirky? Compassionate? Pick 3–5 traits that best describe your brand as though they were a person.

2. Know your audience

Speak in a way that resonates with your customers. If they’re tech-savvy professionals, they may prefer clean, concise and more technical speak. But If your audience is young adults then playful, witty and relaxed works best.

3. Be consistent. Everywhere.

From your homepage to your error messages, your voice should be the same everywhere you are. Like a friend who’s always themselves.

4. Create a messaging guide

Create a document outlining what your brand voice is and write down the traits you came up with initially in step one.You could also keep a library of sample phrases or taglines that sound “on-brand”. This will help keep everyone who works on your product speaking the same voice.

So… What’s Your Brand Really Saying?

Every post, ad, and piece of copy tells your audience who you are - whether you mean to or not. So ask yourself:

  • Does your messaging reflect who you really are?

  • Does it sound like one voice, or a messy mix?

  • And most importantly, how does it make your audience feel?

If you’re unsure, it might be time to find your voice or tune the one you already have.
